My Six Word Memoir

Nicole tagged me to participate in this game. She had been tagged by another blog and she tagged me in turn. The game goes like this: Nicole got tagged to do a post about a six word memoir, a kind of life motto if you will (turns out Nicole could not decide on just one) and then she tags five other people to do just such a post. And then I tag five other people and so on. It’s like chain blog rather like chain mail, only more interesting!

So I thought and thought and thought what my six word memoir is? And only six words? So I actually sat with a paper and pencil and this is what I came up with, which sums up my dictum in life at this time: PLAY MORE GAMES, READ MORE BOOKS.

Books Basket Ball

Now I picked this one because it is quite all encompassing. How all encompassing? I’ll explain. If followed in action and in spirit, this one commandment will take care of your physical, mental and spiritual well being! Still skeptical? Let me elaborate:
When I say ‘play more games’ I mean engage in brisk, vigorous physical activity which is obviously good for us and our bodies. Also if you do get into the habit of playing a game, you get into the habit of being active, socializing with a particular set of likeminded people and also engaging in healthy rivalry or competition with an eye to personal or team betterment. The sense of team spirit fostered by playing a game is also a healthy outcome!

When I say ‘read more books’ I mean that I continue to learn new things, expand my world view and broaden my mind, increase the sum of my knowledge and grow as a person and as a human being! This increases my spiritual awareness of the world around me as well. Books not only increase the sum of your knowledge they also help you grapple with issues that you face in your life. If you turn to books for recreation, you stay away from the idiot box, which is a bonus!

So what do you think? Like my six word Memoir? Oh! Almost forgot: these are the people I will be tagging:

Satellite Communication

The other day my 12 year old niece was behind me for making her school project. The project topic was Satellite Communication and management. Since the dead line of submission of project was coming closer, I finally one day sat down to hunt for the information on the net.

While surfing I came across this site uplogix.com. This site gave me all the information on the project and it is amazing the way they have shown on the site how effectively they manage satellite communications by transporting voice, video and data to and from remote locations. It has various satellite solutions given which are effective in managing remote sites and highly distributed infrastructure. These solutions also help in reducing risks, complexities and cost inherited in managing and distribution of IT infrastructure. There is a wide range of products also to choose as per your requirement.

It is not a very old organization, it was founded in 2003, it has it’s headquartered in Austin, TX (USA) with European offices in London, England.

I gathered a lot of information for the project from this site and in the course of time of doing the project research I got a chance to learn a lot about satellite communications.

Myanmar’s Military Despotism

Aung San Suu KyiIn all my years as a teenager and then as an adult, the name of Aung San Suu Kyi has cropped up from time to time in the news, a brave woman non violently battling the might of the Burmese military junta ceaselessly now for decades. It was when she won the Nobel Peace prize in the early 1990s that the whole world finally took notice of her struggle. Under house arrest for most of the last two decades, she has neither been allowed to leave her country even to be with her family nor has her family been permitted to come and visit her. As a result she was not allowed to visit her husband even when he was diagnosed with prostate cancer and who later died without her being able to be by his side in his final moments.

What has recently refocused world attention on Myanmar’s military junta is the farcical referendum held in the midst of the death and devastation wreaked by cyclone Nargis that left a staggering 60,000 or more dead or missing. The referendum held on 10 May sought public approval of a new constitution sought to be put in place by the Military dictatorship that has ruled Myanmar with an iron hand, which critics have opined will do nothing except strengthen the ruling military’s might and further undermine any democratic process. In any case anyone voting against the referendum is hardly an option for the citizens.

The violent and destructive cyclone that hit the country did not detract the authoritarian regime from going ahead with the referendum. If fact what the Burmese government has done is take advantage of the situation by using the cyclone relief process to drum up propaganda for their own agenda. The aid that has been coming in from around the world has been stamped with the ruling generals’ name and then distributed among the affected people. The military junta takes over all aid that arrives and doles it out to the suffering public like largesses of its own volition.

The human rights violations continue to be rife in the troubled nation of Myanmar. I wonder why the United States does not go in and try to liberate the Burmese people? It certainly purported to do this in Iraq and Afghanistan!

What Does Mother’s Day Mean To You?

Mothers’ day has come and gone (it was last Sunday, if it escaped you completely), did you observe it? Did you give a thought to why this day was instituted in the first place? What does mother’s day mean to you?

Anna Jaervis Last Sunday was the hundredth anniversary of Mother’s day (it was instituted and first celebrated in May 1908) and while it is still celebrated, I feel it has lost much of its original significance and meaning. It was the decade long, tireless efforts of Anna Jarvis due to which the second Sunday of every May is celebrated as Mother’s day. What originally was initiated as a way to show our mothers how much we as their children value their devotion and sacrifice, and how we appreciate the “truth, purity and broad charity of mother love”, now appears to have lost some of its original significance, and has been somewhat derailed by commercialism and quick-fix gifts and greetings. While Anna Jarvis originally visualized simple gestures such as a single white carnation and a heartfelt letter, now Mother’s day has become rather different.

Mind though I am not saying it has changed in a bad way; it has merely changed in a way that reflects the times that we live it. With the internet giving you the incredible convenience of being able to simply send your mother an ecard, or finding a nice gift over the internet (perhaps at a discount) and having it shipped to your mother without having to bother to go and deliver it personally, Mother’s day has simply evolved to echo the times we live in.

Also the lives that we now lead are such that it is not possible to observe mother’s day in the spirit that it was meant to be. Ideally we should be able to take time out and perhaps visit our mothers on the day or at least write her a heartfelt, sincere letter of appreciation. However busy lives and distances do make these things difficult. If therefore I sent my mother a nice card with some lines hand-written inside along with say a book that I thought she may enjoy and spoke to her at length over the phone, I think I conveyed my appreciation of her in the best way possible for me, I think that I made her day somewhat better and I think that I celebrated Mother’s Day in the best possible manner for me. Did you celebrate Mothers’ day? If you did what was it that you did?

Rising Hemlines.. Rising Stocks

The “Hemline Theory”. The belief is, traditionally, hemlines rise in accordance with the economy and they fall when the economy is bad or a stock market fall. So short skirts mean a bull-market? Rising prices?

Hemlines Graph

Long SkirtsThis is not all unsubstantiated you know I have some facts for you here; this economic indicator was coined by a George Taylor in the US during the late 1920’s. In the ‘20’s and 60’s the hemlines were high, so were the stock markets. In the 30’s and 40’s during the market crash the hemlines were so low that women were tripping on their long skirts. In 1929 when Wall Street crashed the hemlines dropped almost overnight. It was during the sixties along with the rise in the stock markets did the hemlines move north. The advent of Mary Quant’s brash mini-skirt marking a booming economy to only have hemlines drop to the feet during the 70’s slump.

Even in 1987 when miniskirts were all the rage, the stock markets were at a matching high. Then the market quickly crashed in October, right when designers such as Bill Blass decided that miniskirts looked ridiculous. Hemlines dropped and so did the market. Coincidence? I think not!

Short Skirts Quirky but yet a historically accurate tool. It could be thought that an economic slowdown could lead women towards nostalgic, conservative looks and during an economic boom: lots of color, daring, playful, unusual pairing and downright naughty. However the million-dollar question posed here, which comes first? Thigh-high or NASDAQ-high?? It is open to debate …

So does this mean you look to fashion runways for an economic outlook? Well yes, in a way. If judging by what we seen over the years if the runways are somber ensembles, sober-looking models then hoard your cash, but if its opulent, luxurious fabrics, glittery and sexy? It means quite simply pricy stuff are going to hit stores and you better get set to buy them! The economy boom can’t be far off!

Robotics And You

So you’re thinking, robotics, hmm… Sure it’s futuristic and all, but not really my cuppa. Think again. People in the ’60’s (or earlier about) all hyped about futuristic robots, they thought by the Millennium all computers would blow up and human life as we know it would end. Then of course to be taken over by robots. Or maybe aliens.

We’ve watched movies where the computers deem humans ‘inefficient’ and proceed to eliminate humankind. Like the mainframe computer in I, Robot. Its not too far I tell you! Look at Doc Ock from Spiderman 2, when one can have runaway robot men then it’s within imagination to have mutated spiders biting people. Go Spiderman!

You must have watched the youtube clips, notice how the robots have better coordination and can dance better than the average person? Even you possibly! Then there’s the US Army exoskeleton, which is a scary thing and the adorable Sony Rolly. The picture you see of the space-ship like thing on the floor is a robo-vacuum. You switch it on and it goes around your house vacuuming by itself… There you see that Sony robo dog. These all designed to replace your dancing partner, the security guard, a clown, maid and your pet dog!

I have evidence to believe robo things are even finding space in the bedroom! Appalling! But chances are someone you know knows someone who might have heard of someone owning one of those! Which might be you! Ha-ha, only joking. The world’s a small place, things come around too quickly. Too quickly for comfort.

Robotics arose out of human lethargy, or as some says need for greater production and efficiency. Robots are automations. Automations we have aplenty all around us already. Majority of the urban city goer’s time is spent interacting with machines. In some kind of automation or the other. The PC without which life does move these days does control our lives to good extent already.

So barricade your doors, keep the pet in. Run up your credit card bills, who cares? The robo’s are taking over the world!!
