The Dead Sea

A very good friend of mine will be visiting the Dead Sea as part of an extended business trip to Israel, and what he told me about the Dead Sea made me curious to find out more. Now I know that you can float on the surface of the Dead Sea having seen a photo similar to this one, but I needed to know more.

Firstly it is not a sea, it actually a large lake (80 km by 16 km) situated between Israel and Jordan. It is the saltiest water body on earth, with a salt content of 33%. To give you some perspective, the oceans of the earth have a salt content of only 3%! This is because there is inflow into the Dead Sea, but no out flow from it, so the salts and minerals carried to it have gotten more and more concentrated over the ages due to high rates of water evaporation. This high salinity and the fact that it is 420 meters (1,378 ft) below sea level is the reason that one is practically unable to sink in the Dead Sea. Therefore you have yon man floating and reading a book in the water!
The Dead Sea is also the world’s first and largest natural spa owing to its unique geographical features. There are several thermo mineral springs around the Dead Sea, it is a natural healing center for several ailments, especially skin related problems.
Because of these geo thermal properties, Dead Sea cosmetics are extremely sought after. Dead Sea Mud is thought to have therapeutic effects on arthritis, muscle pain and is also thought to cleanse and have a beneficial effect on skin.

Salts from the Dead Sea have long been recognized therapeutic and beatifying properties on the skin, because unlike regular sea salt, Dead Sea salts are comprised of a wide variety of minerals such as Magnesium, Potassium, Bromine and Calcium. Whereas regular sea salts is made up of over 90% sodium, salt from the Dead Sea is only about 10% sodium and the rest is made of minerals that are highly beneficial for the skin.
Needless to say, my friend has instructions to get all these products for me that are supposed to rejuvenate and revitalize my skin and hair and make me all radiant and glowing. I’ll be sure to tell you how they work (or don’t work) for me.
