Happy Valentine’s Day!!

Everybody knows about Valentines Day,
but if some of my friends are living under a rock, then let me explain. Valentine Day is celebrated every year on the 14th of February. Many of us know that Valentines Day is a day to be celebrated with your loved ones, but very few of us know the real story behind how this day came to be called as ‘Valentine Day.
A long time back in the 3rd century, a priest named Valentine lived in Rome. At that time, Rome was ruled by an emperor named Claudius. Claudius wanted to have a big army. He wanted men to volunteer to join the army, but most men did not want to leave their wives and families. This made Claudius pass a law; he banned marriage in Rome so that more and more men could join the army.
In spite of a law banning marriage, Valentine kept performing secret marriages of lovers, until he was discovered. Claudius ordered his death and put him behind bars. While in prison, he fell in love with his jailor’s daughter and sent her a love letter just before his execution signed “from your Valentine”.
Some believe that either the date of Valentine’s birth or more likely that of this ultimate martyrdom, fell on 14th February, thus it began to be celebrated as Love Day for all the lovers.
Sadly though, off late Valentines Day has become a highly commercialized occasion. It’s more about expensive gifts and lavish dinners than true love. I hope we can all rise above the commercial aspects and have a truly great, love-filled Valentine!

Have a great Valentine.
