Flash Memory Takes The World Over

The world of portable media began with the floppy, because it was ‘floppy’ is nature. Then came the floppy disk, sturdier and larger capacity. The CD-ROM came soon after and held fort for a long time, DVD’s then made their presence, much more capacity. Today we have Blu-ray disks, touting a maximum capacity of 50GB in double layer format but as the general mode its only single layer with a capacity of 25GB. All this while flash memory was making progress through leaps and bounds.

Pen Drive The docile flash-memory pen drive on its arrive was a great addition to carrying CD’s and other media. Using it was also easy; plug and use delete and modify anything on it. That was not easily possible on CD media; one needed a drive capable of writing, while most drives were read-only. The capacity of the pen drives grew astonishingly; from simple 128 MB disks today you can buy 64GB pen drives!

Pen DriveIt really is fantastic how the USB – Universal Serial Bus and flash memory have gotten together. The versatility brought by them is path breaking. Today, a high number of devices; car audio players, home theater, TV’s and numerous appliances come with a USB slot default. USB has truly become its intention, universal. Imagine, copy your favorite songs on your pen drive at your friend’s place and instantly be able to enjoy them on while driving back home. Data transport has become very versatile like never before.

These days’ digital signatures, soft copies of resumes and forms are all digitized and copied on pen drives. People no longer carry requisite forms and files, all the information is put on pen drives by the processing offices to make life easier for them and for citizens.

The hard media format is going obsolete, take a look this latest device from Sandisk, you can see the tiny card beside the red mp3 player, it is a new generation of players which accept SD (also flash memory) cards, like how we used to music CD’s on portable players now there will be music albums on SD cards which we can use to the same effect.

64GB Pen Drive 64GB pen drives, massive capacity, there are even luxury models like the one in the picture. I guess that depends on the kind of data people use it for… Swiss bank account information I suppose could use a luxury model …

Virtual Living

Video ConferencingVirtual Reality, brought by recent game titles have been making themselves more and more relevant than being written off as play for the anti-social. That includes myself, when World of Warcraft, Second Life were making news I barely bothered to read them. To me it was bunch of highly introvert people chaining themselves to their computers and making out online impressions of ‘cool’ they couldn’t bother to be in real life.

Not entirely untrue. Fact is, anyone can be whatever and however they want if they willed it. Instead of making the effort to move about much people confined themselves to them and their computers to create a dashing and hopeful entity online. It worked, gave them some contentment and satisfaction to lead in virtual at least a life they wanted.

Things have gone beyond that now. The online life is coming closer to reality and even replacing life-events in some cases. From people living fantasy lives now multi-national companies conducting conferences online. Some companies have mapped out their entire campus online so people can wander about and explore their decision to work in that company. A conference-room like environment can be created and the employees can log in all over the work into the room and have a real-life-like conference with people’s movement and visuals.

You’ll have to admit it saves the company a good amount of money, flying their employees to and from conferences, accommodation and the rest. As this technology progresses people could be travelling a lot lesser. At this point one also needs to think about the implications of this new medium. I’ll put it quite simple. Where people can they will. People with criminal intention in real life would sure like to expand their tentacles into the online world, more business quite simply. Or even the other way, budding illegal thinkers have a world new arena to make a start. As time goes I will look more in detail at this virtual living and share it with you all.

Caught In The Web

Web 2.0The seeping in of web 2.0 makes one look back at the advent of computing. Of the many changes brought, the best undoubtedly has been bridging distance, i.e. world wide web. An apt term. The internet truly has worked wonders. Access to people and knowledge in a way unprecedented before. Arguably, there has been nothing like it since time past and only anything of the supernatural can eclipse this some future point. There really is no question that it has irrevocably changed how we lead our lives.

People who have been using the internet for years now already know this. No internet no life. It is quite true. Getting on the internet is both the first thing and last thing people do in a productive day. I know I cannot do without it. It’s enormously like falling out of reception on your cell phone. Just won’t do. The PC has become a source of everything: Work, play, leisure, music, banking, research, movie making, watching and a whole lot more. It will I think in some form soon replace television as we know it.

As we just saw, with almost every conceivable activity now being done through this mammoth network which is both local and but yet world-wide at the same time. When a few years ago I was telling some people that even impoverished people will go to cyber-centres with a website address on a slip of paper to get work done; naturally, people laughed. But it is happening today, look around you. The web has truly ‘webbed’ us all.

Many people say that after first wave ‘IT’ revolution in the ‘90’s the second wave IT web revolution is happening now with web 2.0. Under-utilisation of the complete potential is as much fact as existence of the web itself. I ask you, how many of you use the internet to pay your bills. Or embraced the digital home? Complete with talking fridge and all… Quite possibly, many people are unaware of the full potential they can extract from the web.

Web 2.0 aims at doing exactly that. What is web 2.0? It’s pretty much the same thing in working, only a lot more human friendly. Why I say human friendly is because the interactions and intelligence weaved in makes contact a lot less daunting and personalises the ‘web’ experience to individual users. Just so people use it more. Similar to real life, you spend more time with someone friendly than an arrogant person. Web 2.0 hopes to be your best friend, man-Friday, etc … (if it isn’t already).

For those who didn’t know, many call centres are automated systems, no nice girl on the other end. If the computer is unable to help then you get directed to a ‘real’ person. A web 2.0 function. The era of the internet is today, seek out what all it can do for you and make full use of it… Since there really is no escape from it now…

Robotics And You

So you’re thinking, robotics, hmm… Sure it’s futuristic and all, but not really my cuppa. Think again. People in the ’60’s (or earlier about) all hyped about futuristic robots, they thought by the Millennium all computers would blow up and human life as we know it would end. Then of course to be taken over by robots. Or maybe aliens.

We’ve watched movies where the computers deem humans ‘inefficient’ and proceed to eliminate humankind. Like the mainframe computer in I, Robot. Its not too far I tell you! Look at Doc Ock from Spiderman 2, when one can have runaway robot men then it’s within imagination to have mutated spiders biting people. Go Spiderman!

You must have watched the youtube clips, notice how the robots have better coordination and can dance better than the average person? Even you possibly! Then there’s the US Army exoskeleton, which is a scary thing and the adorable Sony Rolly. The picture you see of the space-ship like thing on the floor is a robo-vacuum. You switch it on and it goes around your house vacuuming by itself… There you see that Sony robo dog. These all designed to replace your dancing partner, the security guard, a clown, maid and your pet dog!

I have evidence to believe robo things are even finding space in the bedroom! Appalling! But chances are someone you know knows someone who might have heard of someone owning one of those! Which might be you! Ha-ha, only joking. The world’s a small place, things come around too quickly. Too quickly for comfort.

Robotics arose out of human lethargy, or as some says need for greater production and efficiency. Robots are automations. Automations we have aplenty all around us already. Majority of the urban city goer’s time is spent interacting with machines. In some kind of automation or the other. The PC without which life does move these days does control our lives to good extent already.

So barricade your doors, keep the pet in. Run up your credit card bills, who cares? The robo’s are taking over the world!!

A ‘Morphing’ Phone

Look at the attached videos. Isn’t it amazing? Imagine owning a phone like the shown Nokia 888? The Sony concept cannot be far behind seeing their prototype. It is a marvellous concept; it would redefine our lives in many ways. Nokia, a company founded in 1865 is today the largest provider of mobile phone technology. This design was launched in the Museum of Modern Art “Design and The Elastic Mind” themed exhibition. Really the mind needs to stretch to accommodate this into our thinking!

This latest innovation ‘Morph’ technology has to be the most cutting edge and transitional breakthrough the world has yet seen. So far we all have been conditioning ourselves to work with technology, learn and adapt to the newer things, newer operations and functionality. Here with the Morph concept the gadget adapts itself to your lifestyle. Isn’t that fabulous? It would be god sent to all technology-adverse people. Operation of this technology based product will be as natural as flipping through a magazine and as convenient carrying as wearing a watch. No buttons to be scared of, all touch sensitive!

Some remarkable features of this new technology are;

Flexible and versatile adapting shape and colour to however you may want to use it, as a wrist watch or a regular phone or a tablet any which way your imagination takes you!

Solar powered. No need worrying to find a plug point.

Superhydrophobic surface which repels dirt, water and even finger prints thereby reducing corrosion, wear and improving longevity.

An absolutely cutting-edge-unheard-of new feature is the environment sensor. Which can tell you if something you want to eat can be consumed or not, it can tell you on the pollution levels of the air around you and various other things one can set the bio-chemical sensor to identify to them. Whatever you may want to know on your environment.

Statistics indicate Nokia sells 18 phones every second of every day which is an enormous number making it easily the world’s largest mobile phone maker and with more than one billion handsets shipped is the world’s largest mobile computing platform. It would be fantastic if billions of people could be touched by this amazing piece of technology.
